General Information

All of the US Virgin Islands are US Territories and considered part of the United States. Accepted currency is US dollars. English is the official language. Of the three main islands, St. Croix is the largest at 22 miles long and 7 miles wide. The landscape is diverse, from dry, desert ecosystems on the east end of the island to a lush rainforest on the west end.

St. Croix offers a steady temperature range year-round, primarily in the 80s. Water temperature is also consistently in the low-80s. Rain is more likely March through January. We usually visit during this time and have found rainfall to be the short bursts of rain typical of a Caribbean island. Nothing to ruin a vacation!

Hurrican season typically runs late August through early October. September is the month most likely to see a hurricane. You can still travel during this time, but it's highly suggested to check weather forecasts before doing so.

Driving

We do not offer airport transfers. It's recommended you rent a vehicle. There are so many great restaurants and places to see on the island, renting a vehicle is truly the best way to get around. If you do rent a vehicle, remember to STAY LEFT! Although cars are American in style with the steering wheel on the left, we do drive on the left.

The roads on St. Croix aren't the best. There are potholes and many roads are poorly lit and poorly marked. This makes it even more important to stay left and drive safe. A pocket map of St. Croix is available from all rental car agencies. There is also one in our condo. Just remember to put it back in the condo for the next guest before you return your rental car. Remember you're on island time in St. Croix! It's okay to take your time and enjoy the sights. And, most important, stay left!

Parking is provided in front of all the condo units at Gentle Winds. Please park only in the designated areas.

Cell Service

Before traveling to St. Croix, make sure your cell plan allows phone calls, texts and data roaming while on the island. Many cell phone companies allow you to add the US Virgin Islands to your plan for a nominal fee. It's well worth the fee for the ability to use GPS alone, especially since some roads aren't clearly marked. In addition, being able to text all your friends with pictures of the beautiful scenery just to make them jealous ... totally worth it!

Wifi service is available in the condo. While connected, various wifi calling and texting apps work great. Information to access the wifi is provided with driving directions and access information prior to your arrival.
